Empowering Tanzanian Farmers: Wakandi and TCDC's New SACCOS Initiative

On 10th July 2025, Wakandi Tanzania Limited, in collaboration with the Tanzania Cooperative Development Commission (TCDC) and the Tanzania Federation of Cooperatives (TFC), launched a transformative initiative in the southern regions of Tanzania. The aim: to establish Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOS) within each Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society (AMCOS).
This initiative is a part of the ASDP II program that seeks to enhance financial inclusion for farmers by enabling access to savings and credit services through newly formed SACCOS.
Wakandi’s focus is to support farmers and strengthen financial inclusion, improving how AMCOS deliver savings and credit services to their members. By targeting specific agricultural communities, the goal is to drive sustainable development in Tanzania’s agricultural sector, with the formation of SACCOS within AMCOS being a key component.
As part of the launch event, Wakandi Tanzania signed agreements with four newly formed SACCOS, established under the AMCOS transformation program. The agreement signing was overseen by the Regional Registrar of Cooperatives in Tabora Region.

According to Dr. Benson, Head Registrar of Cooperatives in Tanzania, this initiative will enhance the income, productivity, and overall well-being of farmers. By working together, farmers can leverage their collective power to secure better prices, access credit, enhance inputs and services, and manage risks effectively.

This partnership addresses the critical challenge of limited access to financial services in rural and underserved areas. Wakandi Tanzania, in collaboration with TCDC and TFC, will deploy tools like the Cooperative Association Management System (CAMS), a digital platform that supports AMCOS in managing loans, transactions, and member operations efficiently. In addition capacity building is key to suceed with the digitisation of the sector and computer equipment is an important aspect of it.

What’s Next?
This collaboration is currently focused on the Tabora region, a key agricultural hub known for crops like tobacco. Wakandi also plans to provide training and education for AMCOS leaders on the principles and operations of SACCOS, including digital financial literacy, to ensure proper governance and sustainability of the newly formed SACCOS. When this phase of the project is over we wil continue to further roll it out to other areas of Tanzania.
